J-2 Ead Extension

J-2 Ead Extension

Employment may not begin until the J-2 has received the work permit, called the Employment Authorization Document (EAD). The EAD allows the J-2 dependent to work in any job, full-time or part-time. Employment cannot extend beyond the end date on the EAD. Extensions of the EAD are possible, up to the end date on the DS-2019.

Extension cannot use J-2 funds to support their program extension application that were earned using their EAD card. In addition, J-2 dependents who currently have an EAD card and want to continue employment must wait for the J-1 Program Extension to be approved before filing another Form I-765 to extend their employment authorization.

The J-1’s extension of stay must be granted before the J-2’s application extension of work permission is submitted to USCIS. It is important to complete both the extension of stay and the extension of employment authorization procedures before the expiration date on the J-1’s current DS-2019 Form.
